Since the launch of Team Bravo in April 2007, we have grown to a total of 57 members. The computer power that our volunteer community has donated equals one PC running nonstop for almost 23 years. Team members are returning on average 73.65 results per calender day and in about a week will have reached a very grand total of 10 million points. Thanks all!

With our tremendous members, there are often huge milestones to cheer. Yesterday saw the team captain, tgeorge, storm through 2,000,000 points for example and by the end of today justin-thyme will have joined the
one million points club!

To join the other wonderful projects, on May 12th the World Community Grid launched Nutritious Rice for the World.

The objective of this project is to predict the structure of proteins of major strains of rice. The intent is to help farmers breed better rice strains with higher crop yields, promote greater disease and pest resistance, and utilize a full range of bioavailable nutrients that can benefit people around the world, especially in regions where hunger is a critical concern.

A few weeks ago Team Bravo celebrated its 1 year anniversary. On the day that it was created there were approximately 88 thousand fewer members at the WCG than there are today. It has been a good year all round and now, as we hurtle forward, it will not be long before there are over a million devices connected via the grid throughout the world. Join us today and become a part of this global initiative to make a difference by contributing something that we do not use anyway, our computer's idle time, and help us help those with the know-how to find solutions and cures to problems and diseases that could and do affect us all.

Though a relatively small team, Bravo has in its year of existence returned over 30,000 results and as has been reiterated here many times and not too often, each of those results had/has the potential to provide crucial information and for every one crossed off the list, we are one step closer to the right ones. In short, if not for all of our wonderful team mates, who took the time to join us at the WCG and at Bravo, there would be 30,000+ particular steps still to be taken. In joining, you have made a difference and will continue to do so. For those reading this who have not yet joined, I can tell you that it takes less than 5 minutes to do so and that nothing further will be required of you. Your donation is those 5 minutes of your time and as for the rest, it will work automatically once you have signed up and downloaded the agent, which in turn will work for the grid whenever you aren't using your computer and will not encumber your use in any way. One can easily forget that one is a member, but should you choose to be reminded, one can click on the agent's icon which sits in the clock panel and follow its progress or come visit us at The House of Bravo, our team forum, where there is always coffee on the stove and welcoming faces.

I am just one person. Taking just family and recent events, I have lost a cousin to Cancer, a great-uncle to Cancer, a cousin to an AIDS-related disease and a cousin-once-removed is currently battling Breast Cancer. If one goes a few years back, there is a great-uncle lost to Cancer, my paternal grandmother to Cancer...quite frankly the list goes on. And that is just my family. Just one person's.
Just one person I am in the steps that I can take. Just one person I am to join the World Community Grid. But one person I am to stand with many more one persons across the globe, as a united force, do what we can to help battle these life-taking diseases. There are several things that we can do, most commonly raising and/or donating money, but there is another way to add or substitute this with, namely donating idle computer time. This is a very simple way of contributing, of making a difference, and all it requires is 5 minutes of your time to set up your computer to be just one of the current 955,761 machines across the World working together to help find cures and medicines for amongst others Cancer and Aids.

Not bad at all for a team that is less than 10 months old! Nerdy is the 8th member to join in a very short space of time. Watching the stats this past fortnight, always a source of excitement and gratification knowing every one of those results is important, has been downright newsworthy! One example:

When the base campers pitched their tents with us, our team was given a tremendous boost and now as they slowly begin to move on to pastures new, visiting teams like ourselves, it is the banter and bacon at the House that will be missed the most. :-) Wishing you well as you travel forth, with thanks particularly for the fun.

The stats these past two weeks have been nothing short of phenomenal!

tgeorge1 aka Trée has over 5 years of runtime, 1,365,543 points and has returned 5,125 results.

ThunderBob has 784,945 points and returned results total 2,520.

ariadneK aka Kiley has 712,238 points and has returned 1,514 results.

justin-thyme our 4th member of the 500,000+ group has 543,144 and has returned to date 1,370 results.

Dataman, one of our base campers was with us for just 13 days and in that time accumulated 470,940 points and returned a staggering 5,009 results. That is 5,009 results closer that the grid has come to finding what they seek, cures, better medicines, to aid.

karen6977 has 296,727 points and has completed 897 calculations.

AutumnStorm, 241,382 points and 807 results.

digitaldoom aka Daniel has 220,658 points and has returned 944 results.

SaintlyNate, one of the first to join us and whom has been crunching steadily ever since has 212,868 points and has returned 902 results.

Mushball, another of our base campers and still with us has been racing up the scoreboard and now has 156,868 points and has completed 1,699 calculations.

Sherry G, another backbone of the team, steadily crunching since the beginning of Bravo, has accumulated 118,468 and returned 279 results.

courtney42 has reached the grand total of 111,377 points and 324 results returned.

Karen Mason has 105,951 and is the reason why the grid is 392 steps closer.

Champagne in honour of TotalChaos aka DJB this week as he eclipsed 100,000 points. His totals now stand at 100,107 and 441.

CJG, our youngest member and with us only since Christmas Day has already gathered 91,917 points and has returned 216 results.

Adywebb@BC, base camper, has 81,974 points and 844 results returned.

SweetJaine/Sweet Jane aka Grace has 73,744 points and has returned a total of 213 results.

ebzepsentme aka Jules has 68,864 and 231 returned results.

JamieB is not far off a personal milestone with 47,372 points and 184 returned results.

consise10/concise10 has reached 47,593 points and119 results.

Champagne for ebezp aka Simon also as he reaches the milestone of 100 results returned. His points amass to 42,589.

Team Bravo is part of the World Community Grid, where together people gather from across the world to actively participate in research by using their spare CPUs to work on calculations automatically downloaded via the grid using a very small, completely safe piece of software developed and donated by IBM. The Grid sponsors a number of projects at any one time. This has been the most amazing and inspiring week at Team Bravo.
We have some guests in the house, making the most scrumptious-looking morning meals on open camp fires and helping us crunch while they are at it. A very special group of people known as base campers who move from spot to spot and make a lasting and memorable impression whilst there. This much I have learned already, for I must admit to not having heard of Base Campers until they started showing up with hungry bellies, huge hearts and beaming smiles. Thankfully pie seems to go down well and the captain aka tgeorge1 makes a mean margarita.

We have 7 tents pitched, 7 hearts of gold doing what they do, caring, supporting, helping, and as such our results have catapulted up to over...As a team, we have now returned over 20,000 results, the thought is so incredibly gratifying, to know that together, as a team, we have made a significant contribution to helping in the research for cures and better medicines, that because each of us has been willing to sign up to the World Community Grid, we are now 20,000+ results closer as a global group to completing the various projects that the grid has been working on in the 9 months that Team Bravo has existed. Bless your hearts for your contributions and a very special thank you to the base campers for hanging with us, your company is thoroughly delightful.

As mentioned above, this week in the history of Bravo has been something quite special. There has been a host of special milestones and a lot of movement in the charts. Just now as the stats were updated, a comely appeared at the top, as tgeorge1 aka Trée reached the fabulously grand total of 5 years of runtime! Trée is also just a few results away from having returned 5,000 results!

Dataman has made an absolutely awesome contribution having returned over 3000 results and accumulating close to 300,000 points!

And karen6977 is not very far behind him on that score!

Just a little further down the scoreboard, CJG is approaching 80,000 points!

Mushball has over 50,000 points and JamieB is well on her way to surpassing this total too!

Amazing dedication we have seen, time and time again, steady crunchers who donate week after week their idle computer time to help scientists in their research. These loving, kind and gentle faces belong to Deena and her husband, Rich.

Crunchers and most bloggers are of a somewhat similar mould. Shared characteristics mainly a willingness, a desire, to gather and to impact, to make a difference. Each day our team members donate their spare CPUs through the freeware provided by the World Community Grid, each day I see them communicate and offer support and encouragement and work together in hope of finding a cure for various illnesses. Each day too, bloggers from across the globe, initial strangers who often times may never meet, connecting with one another, displaying genuine love and caring, through dry spells and prolificity, through the good times and the tough. Deena is a fellow blogger, with a blog that more readily than most emits a strong presence, an essence of heart and soul. Crunchers know that it all counts, that together we are stronger, that by breaking a huge task up into smaller parts, we can each do our bit and as a whole move mountains. Likewise bloggers who have been here for any length of time have come to realize why this is a magical place and just how one person is able to touch the heart of another. It is the best of us.

Deena has been diagnosed with breast cancer and begins chemo tomorrow (Friday 8th)

This is an amazing feat worthy of resounding applause for a team not yet a year old and it gives such a positively fabulous sense of what is to come over the next year! 5,000,000 points and more importantly we have returned over 17,000 results, and as you know team mates, every single one of those results has made a difference, every single result returned has brings us that much closer to finding better medicines, to finding a cure for the various diseases that the grid is and will be working on. With thanks to every one of you Bravo troopers for joining and for putting your hearts and soul into returning as many results as possible, for all your positive feedback, for your encouragement of each other and for your promotion. Remember, anyone and everyone with a computer and an internet connection are welcome to join us, it takes just a couple of minutes to register, download and install the agent and just 5 seconds more to join Team Bravo.
It is 100% safe and easy to set-up and once done, no further action is required, your computer will simply download a calculation to work on whenever it is idle and send it back to the main server when the calculation is complete.

Each day we make choices, hundreds of them, little ones, large ones. They all have repercussions of some sort, known, unknown, immediate, delayed. Here is the opportunity not only to make a good decision, but to see the repercussions immediately, to follow their progress, to have it confirmed time and again that this decision was a good decision and that the good will be far-reaching. The decision I speak of is whether or not to join the World Community Grid. It is an easy decision to make, if given the time it takes to make it. It is a way of helping humankind rid itself of disease and issues that are affecting us, the people around us near and far and the planet that we live upon.

All that is required to start helping today is a computer and an internet connection. Joining takes just a few minutes and after that your computer takes care of the rest, using it's spare CPUs to work on the data that it downloads and sending the results back to the main server once it has completed the task. Every time you step away from your computer and it is idle, it will start or continue working on it's current task. Team Bravo's progress of late has been too wonderful not to make a note of the stats as they stand on this day, January 26th 2008. As we prepare to celebrate the start of the new year, most of us will inevitably spend some time reflecting upon the year that is ending. What it brought to our lives, those around us, to the World, what we did, what we saw, what we learned, who we loved, who loved us, what differences we made...

There are 527,040 minutes in 2008, which might seem a large number watching from zero, but as we all know time races along at an alarming rate, always has, always will, and the only way to capture some of it is to use what time we have well.

There is a way whereby you can stretch 5 of your designated minutes indefinitely.

It takes just 5 minutes complete the very simple registration process that will allow you to start participating in a global project to find cures for diseases such as Cancer.

IBM world community grid squeezes decades of cancer research into 2 years

Canadian researchers expect to accelerate the war on cancer by tapping into a global network of hundreds of thousands of people who volunteer their idle computer time to tackle some of the world’s most complex problems.

The research team, led by Dr. Igor Jurisica at the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), and scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network, are the first from Canada to use the World Community Grid, a network of PCs and laptops with the power equivalent to one of the globe’s top five fastest supercomputers.

The team will use World Community Grid to analyze the results of experiments on proteins using data collected by scientists at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, New York. This analysis would take conventional computer systems 162 years to complete. However, using World Community Grid, Dr. Jurisica anticipates the analysis could be finished in one to two years, and will provide researchers with a better way to study how proteins function, insight that could lead to the development of more effective cancer-fighting drugs.

“We know that most cancers are caused by defective proteins in our bodies, but we need to better understand the specific function of those proteins and how they interact in the body,” said Dr. Jurisica. “We also have to find proteins that will enable us to diagnose cancer earlier, before symptoms appear, to have the best chance of treating the disease -- or potentially stopping it completely.”

The research team now has more than 86 million images of 9,400 unique proteins that could be linked to cancer, captured in the course of more than 14.5 million experiments by colleagues at Hauptman-Woodward.

This comprises the most comprehensive database on the chemistry of a large number of proteins, a resource that will help researchers around the world unlock the mystery of how many cancers, such as breast, prostate or childhood leukemia, grow.

Approximately 150,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 70,000 will die of the disease in 2007 alone.

Individuals can donate their computers for this project by registering on http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org , and installing a free, secure, small software program on their computers. The computer requests data from World Community Grid’s server when it is idle, for example a user is at lunch, and performs the cancer-related protein computations. A screen saver will tell individuals when their computers are being used.

World Community Grid, the largest public humanitarian grid with more than 333,000-plus members and links to more than 780,000 computers. However, it’s estimated that there are one billion computers worldwide, underscoring the potential for the grid and its computational power to significantly expand. Eight projects have been run on World Community Grid to date, including protein folding and FightAIDS@Home, which completed five years of HIV/AIDS research in just six months. Additional projects are in the pipeline.

Congratulations to tgeorge1 aka Trée aka the captain and creator of Team Bravo and as such whom without there would be no Team Total of results. And so the thanks extend to introducing the rest of us to The World Community Grid. :-) Lead on, captain.

For those who do not know, to those who do bear with me as I repeat certain facts, Team Bravo is one of over 18,000 teams (comprising almost 850,000 computers) that are linked to the grid by a very small agent freely available to download from their website. It is completely safe and does not interfere with one's use of one's computer. To register, download and install takes less than 5 minutes and to join Team Bravo, just a couple of seconds more. In so doing, you will be part of a community working together to assist in research towards finding medicines and cures for a range of diseases including Cancer, Hepatitis C and AIDS. Worthy causes all and such an easy thing to do. All it requires is that one time contribution of 5 minutes of time. No other effort is needed, nothing. The device works in the background when the computer is idle, using spare CPUs to work on data that it automatically downloads from the WCG and then sends it back when completed. as per usual, you guys have been crunching away and steadily returning result after result! Although I post these statistics updates quite often, the increase each time is significant. We are now in the top 800 teams in regards to points, no mean feat at all considering our young age and the fact that there are almost 18,000 teams currently registered. Last night, Team Bravo gave us yet more cause to celebrate having reached 10 years of runtime, which to put it another way means that for every 24 hours of real time that team Bravo has been in operation, our relatively few members have contributed over 420 hours of runtime to the World Community Grid, who in turn have put those contributions to most excellent use procuring over 11,000 results.

The grid celebrates this week too. As of November 16th, it has been running for 3 years and the total results sent back from over 800,000 computers across the globe now exceeds 128,000,000!
'tis okay, I have a lump in my throat too. To think there are hundreds of thousands of people united in an effort to find cures and solutions for problems effecting all of humanity, AIDS and Cancer to name but two of the current projects.

The good news is, yes there is more good news, anyone with a computer and an internet connection can be a part of it and all it requires is 5 minutes of setting up after which it runs automatically never interfering with personal use. Genius, pure and simple, but then those guys at IBM who donated the software that allows the individual to connect to the grid are somewhat known for it.

Five minutes, two steps to start making a change, to be a part of a global project to help ourselves, to potentially make a world of difference to the individual afflicted, the individual which could one day be you or I, someone we know, someone we love. Those among us for example who have not been touched by Cancer within their closest circles are very fortunate indeed.

5 minutes, 2 steps, easy, safe, worthwhile, please, thank you.
